Twitter for Consumer Businesses (Slides)

Twitter for Businesses

I recently sat down with a group of venture capitalists to discuss Twitter for Business, specifically talking about how consumer facing brands can leverage Twitter. I focused on what I believe to be the primary businesses uses for Twitter today: 1.) customer service and 2.) marketing. I also highlighted a few trends that I think are worth watching. I finally got around to posting the deck (here and on slideshare). Did I miss anything that you think is important for consumer businesses on Twitter?

Here are the slides:

  • Thanks for the comment, Cameron!
I find the ROI discussion to be one of the keys going forward in Social Media and Twitter. I really want to see is a universal way to compare a dollar spent on social vs. a dollar spent on a CPC or CPM campaigns. I definitely think it is possible to measure and achieve. But for the majority of companies there doesn't seem to be a clear approach to quantify the impact yet. I suspect it will come by identifying the "middle of the funnel" metrics that are known revenue drivers and determining the impact on those metrics. But I imagine the specific approach used will also differ considerably from business to business.
  • I think you've summed up the current situation quite well.

I like the point about ROI being difficult to quantify with regard to investments in Twitter. The ROI is there, it's just really difficult to track, and only a few firms have really made Twitter a direct revenue source from customer acquisition. I wonder if, over time, this situation will go one way or the other (either Twitter becomes more effective for generating revenue, or loses its effectiveness).
